Beyond the Shiny Object: Building the Foundation for AI Success
Liz Henderson, The Data Queen
AI is marketed as transformational, fast, and effortless, yet many organisations remain trapped in a costly cycle of hype, disappointment, and replacement technologies that never quite deliver. This session explores why the promise of AI consistently falls short without strong data foundations, clear ownership, and executive alignment. Through familiar examples, including long-standing challenges such as Master Data Management (MDM). The session examines why these problems persist, what really gets in the way, and how organisations can make meaningful progress using a practical “start small, medium effort, big impact” approach. Crucially, it shows how to reframe data and AI initiatives in the language of the executive committee (ExCo), enabling stronger sponsorship, funding, and mandate to execute, and turning data strategy from a technical discussion into a business imperative.
